Once you understand and can identify bad sound, it’s time to do something about it. Many have no idea that they contribute to the propagation of bad sound, or that they actually pay for bad sound—literally and figuratively. But every time you pay the doorman at the local club, every time you drop a few quarters in a pub’s jukebox, and every time you reach deep into your pocket to give something back to your church, you could unknowingly be supporting bad sound. Here’s what you can do to stop the cycle of badness.

Take a hard look at your surroundings. Are you using ancient, inefficient, worn-out sound equipment? Does the quality of sound coming from your audio system fill you with disgust? Do you find yourself saying, "This sound system sure makes my (fill in the blank) look bad?" If you answered yes to any of the above questions, send us a photograph of the system you'd like to replace. You could be rewarded with one of three sound systems upgrades courtesy of Mackie. Remember, admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery.

Retail partners in The Coalition to End Bad Sound are ready to provide you with an in-store demonstration of good sound and the equipment used to make it. Most notably, they can show you the complete line of award-winning Mackie Active and Precision Passive loudspeakers.

If you’ll be attending an event where you suspect there could be bad sound, call ahead. Ask for specifics on the venue’s sound system. If you feel your concerns are not being taken seriously, continue pressing the redial button on your phone until you get an acceptable response.

When you find yourself exposed to bad sound at a club, ask the staff for 12 pairs of earplugs for you and your friends. Stick a pair in your ears (always protect yourself first), then hand out the rest. Gradually, the venue owners will realize they can save money on earplugs simply by upgrading their sound system.
